He received an early Honorable Discharge from the Marine Corps after two years due to a congenital orthopedic problem (chronic dislocation of right shoulder). He graduated from Webster University with a Bachelors of Arts in Social Science in 1972 and shortly thereafter went to the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University from 1973 to 1975 graduating with a Masters in Social Work.
He worked for the State of Missouri Dept. of Social Services from 1974 to 1976 after which he was hired by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs as a Clinical Social Worker where he worked until retirement in 2012 after 36 yrs. of service. During his years at the VA he served in multiple roles including Coordinator of the Prisoner of War program and for thirteen years interviewed and evaluated veterans from WWII, Korea, Vietnam and the Gulf Wars who suffered from PTSD due to combat experiences.
He earned another master’s degree in Community Development from the University of Missouri College of Public & Community Services in 1982. After retirement from the Department of Veterans Affairs he was hired by the Missouri Department of Health, Division of Senior & Disability Services where he has worked for a total of eight yrs. with prior service.
His work with the Dept. of Health involves evaluating and processing reports of abuse, neglect and exploitation of elderly and disabled adults.
He and his sister still own and operate a sesquicentennial farm established their their great grandfather in 1860 in Pike Co., Illinois approximately 4 miles north of Summer Hill. The house their great grandfather built still stands on the farm.
He has a daughter that is a veterinarian living in Overland Park, KS with a veterinary practice in Kansas City, Mo. His son in law is a chemistry professor at Avila University in Kansas City.
