George Edward Baumgartner, 77, of Auxvasse passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2008 at his place of business.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 am Friday, March 4, at Auxvasse City Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Bob Marty, Raymond McCllister Jr. and Jim Graham officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7:00 pm Thursday at the Maupin Funeral HOme in Fulton, followed by a Masonic service. Burial will be at Auxvasse Cemetery.
George Edward Baumgartner was born February 5, 1928, in Fulton, the second child of Emmett and Beulah Baumgartner.
George married Dorothy Springer on July 6, 1948.
An entrepreneur at an early age, George and his father Emmett started out in business together in 1946 in the Champlin service station on Old Highway 40 in Kingdom City.
In 1965, George diversified into the furniture business, opening Baumgartner's Furniture. From its' humble beginnings in a 700 square foot vacated post office in McCredie, Baumgartner's Furniture Inc. today encompasses over 40,000 square feet in Auxvasse and at Mattress World in Columbia.
Active in business and civic activities, George was a member and elder of Auxvasse Presbyterian Church, Jackson Township Democratic committeeman, a member of Democratic Central Committee, city police judge of Auzvasse for eight years, chairman and board member of the Callaway Hospital for four years, treasurer of the Kingdom Telephone Board, secretary of the Ausvasse IOOF Lodge, member of the Callaway County Cancer Board, the Missouri Division of the American Cancer Society, the Public Issues Committee and Mid-Missouri Mental Health Organization.
He was appointed to the Small Business Administration Committee by President Jimmy Carter.
He was also a member of the committee to establish the Senior Center of Auxvasse, the Appraisal Board for Callaway Nuclear Ground, Montgomery Masonic Lodge No. 246, Mid Missouri Shrine Club and Moolah Temple of St Louis, Ambassador of the Shrine of Moolah Temple, and member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry in Columbia, Alepppo Grotto in Columbia, Crusade Commander No. 23 in Mexico, Triune Chapter No 93 RAM in Montgomery City, Centralia Council no 34 R&SM, The Order of White Shrine of Jerusalem, Order of Eastern Star, M. Graham Clark Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and Sons of the Confederate Veterans.
