John Leon Funk 1909-1997

 

John Leon Funk, 87, of Columbia died Wednesday, Jan 8, 1997, at Candlelight Lodge.
Services will be at 2 pm Saturday, Jan 11, at Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Wilkes O’Brien officiating. There will be no visitation.
Mr. Funk was born Nov 15, 1909, in Coshocton, Ohio, to Earl and Nellie Huff Funk.
He married Ruth Eleanor Blue on Dec 23, 1933, in Fort Wayne, IN, and she preceded him in death July 1, 1987.
He received a bachelor’s degree in education from Kent State College and a master’s in zoology from the University of Michigan.
He served as an oficer in the U.S. Army Ordnance De[partment in the European-African Theater during World War II and came to Missouri in 1945 to work as a fisheries research biologist for the State Department of Conservation, retiring after 30 years as superintendent of the Fisheries Research Department.
He was an honorary life member of the American Fisheries Society, and Emeritus Fellow of the Institute of Fishery Research Biologists, and elder at First Presbyterian Church, a Mason, a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International, a Son of the American Revolution, and a member of the Retired Officers Association.
