Compatriot Merrill became a member of the Missouri Society of the Sons of the American Revolution January 24, 1987. His patriot ancestor is John Sidebottom, who served as a Private in the Virginia line.

Besides serving on the Missouri Society Board as and Vice President, 1st Vice President, and Executive Vice President; he served as Chaplain for seven years and is now the alternate Trustee.

He served as Color Guard Commander for the Central District of Missouri for several years. As a member of the M. Graham Clark Chapter, he has filled the offices of Secretary, Historian, Chaplain, Color Guard Commander, Trustee, Vice President, and President.

As an ordained minister, he has served as Pastor for the Wooldridge Baptist Church since January 1979. He serves as a docent for the University of Missouri's Museum of Art and Archaeology and sings in the University's Choral Union. In 1975 he and his wife sang in the choir for the bicentennial celebration at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C..

He was one of the founders of the Missouri State Genealogical Association in 1981, serving on the board of directors, and was the first editor of the Missouri State Genealogical Association journal.

He is a life member of the American Hemerocallis Society and is a past Regional Vice President; serving Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma.

He also hold memberships in the American Iris Society and the Siberian Iris Society.

He loves to travel having visited 22 countries and 41 of the 50 U. S. States. He is married to Patricia Ann (Charles) Merrill and they have two married daughters and two grandchildren.
