Paul P. Polly 1919-2006

 

Paul P. Polly, 86, of Columbia passed away Wednesday, Jan 18, 2006, at Boone Hospital Center after a brief illness.
Services will be held at 11 am Saturday, Jan 21, at Parker Funeral Service with Rev Dr. John Yonker officiating. Burial will be at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Fayette.
Paul was born June 22, 1919, in Morgan County, the youngest of eight children born to William O. and Rosa Lee Fletcher Polly in the same small house in which his father was born. Paul was about 10 years old when the Lake of the Ozarks was built, covering the family's farm. They then migrated to Howard County, where Paul met Helen Margaret Tindall.
Paul and Helen attended rural elementary schools together and were two of the seven graduates of Farmer's High School in May 1937. The following month, on his 189th birthday, Paul was inducted into the US. Navy.
He went to Great Lakes, IL, for boot camp and then to San Diego, CA, for electrical school. Helen joined him and they were married in Vallejo, CA, on July 10, 1940 and they lived in San Diego.
He served briefly on the battleships USS Utah and USS Oklahoma. He was then assigned to the USS Neosho, a new oil tanker, originally built for Standard Oil Co. in the spring of 1941. Paul and Helen moved to Bremerton, WA. Paul received an honorable discharge from the Navy in Bremerton on June 11, 1941. Paul went back into the Navy on Aug 31, 1944 and served until October 1945.
Paul joined the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Locval Union 257 in Jefferson City in December 1941, and returned to Jefferson City early in 1946, where he worked as an electrician. In 1962, the family moved to Columbia and Paul became the manager of Richardson Howerton Electric Co. until 1967. then was president of Polly Electric Co. Inc. and operated the company until his retirement in 1969.
He was a member of VFW Post 280, Post 280 Navy Club in Columbia, M. Graham Clark Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, and M. Parsons Camp of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans.
