Wm. Gordon Buckner 1934-2016

William Gordon Buckner, 81, of Marshall, MO, died Tuesday, May 24, 2016, at his home.
Gordon was born on December 25, 1934, in Marshall, the son of the late Charles Madison Buckner, Jr. and Mary Margaret Gordon Buckner.
After graduating from Marshall High School, Gordon attended Westminster College and was a member of Beta Theta Pi. He transferred to and graduated from Northwestern University and later earned an MBA from Washington University in St. Louis.
Gordon enlisted and served in the US Army and served three years in the Army Security Agency. He graduated as a Russian language interpreter. After graduation he joined the Wood & Huston Bank and served several capacities, including a member of the Board of Directors, before leaving in 1983 to start several businesses offering employment, accounting and tax services. His hobbies included amateur radio, photography, bicycling and world traveling with his loved companion, Betty Clements.
Above all, his passion was service to others. The organizations of which he served included the Great Rivers Council Boys Scouts of America (Executive Board), Rotary Club of Marshall (officer and Board of Directors), American Legion Post 191 (Life Member), Paris Lions Club, Ridge Park Cemetery Association, American Heart Association, Salt Fork YMCA, Children and Sons of the American Revolution (receiving several awards), several capacities in the Masonic Lodge (4th generation) and many other organizations too many to list. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Marshall.
He also served others with his generous giving. In 1996 he founded the Margaret G. Buckner Foundation which has contributed scholarship dollars to encourage hundreds of students entering the medical profession to return to Saline County to practice their profession. And in 2001 he founded the Buckner Foundation that has made significant contributions to dozens of non-profit organizations throughout Saline County.
Survivors include several cousin, his parents and Gordon was preceded in death by a sister infancy, Mary Buckner.
Graveside services with military rites will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2016, at Ridge Park Cemetery in Marshall, with Dr. Mike Parris officiating.
